Following a career as a physician and scientist, Laurence decided around 2014 to refocus his energy on studio art.  He had always had an active interest in art that included painting and drawing,  as well as coursework and workshops.  He mentions several courses and interactions with Nathan Olivera and Frank Lobdell while a student at Stanford that galvanized his interest.  Autobiographical themes in Elias’ work are noticeable, as expressive organic patterns emerge from ordered geometric starting points. More importantly, Laurence intends his art to elicit magical, transporting, or uncanny states of mind. For him, art is about inner experiences that may be enjoyably disruptive.

Laurence attended the UC Berkeley Extension post-baccalaureate certificate program, followed by enrollment in the California College of the Arts’ graduate program. He received his MFA in Visual Art in 2018.
