String Drawings

I utilize a  relatively primitive weaving technique, using ordinary string that I drenched one by one in acrylic paint.  This practice allows the string to "escape" the strictures of initial grids to wander into more organic patterns.

The 2019 "Inner Rivers Run Deep" series pieces were assembled from multiple overlapping layers comprised of acrylic paint, mesh, jute, string and cord.  The grid structure is intrinsic to the various materials and composition, but spins out into something else balanced between complexity and chaos. This series was inspired by wall size installations of grids made of rope in front of spray-painted grids I constructed in my studio at CCA.  As I viewed these and my focus shifted from one layer to another, their respective identities (real versus painted) became pleasantly ambiguous and uncanny.
